Free and Open Source Software Foundation has been established in February of 2007 with its headquarters in Poznań for purposes of many goals that allow the growth of  the idea of free and open source software in Poland.

It has been established to increase the integration of similar initiatives  in Poland and abroad -  to join those initiatives and work together to popularize the idea of free and open source software software.

The Foundation was brought to life to boost development of democratic country and civil society - the essential part of this process being informatisation.  One of the strategic goals of Foundation is to aid transfer of accomplishments in the matter of free software into the economy.

The Foundation boosts actions targeted against the digital divide thru equalization of opportunities,  free access to information technology tools and ability to make unrestricted choice of any solutions at the meeting point of communication - administration to administration, administration to business and administration to citizen. The current and future actions of Foundation are aiming not only at the administration's offices but also toward non-government, scientific or educational organizations, as well as business sector and citizens. In its activity Foundation merges the knowledge of academic and practitioner with a long-term experience, including  those who are particularly enthusiastic and have broad intellectual potential.
